As lead Exhibit Designer at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, I designed an entry area, an exit space, and additional artifact cases as part of an effort to update an existing permanent exhibition on the history of Los Angeles and resulted in a more cohesive and clear telling of the city’s history.

 

The new entry space serves as a preview of the exhibition’s content with colored overhead banners that display each exhibit section’s title and color theme. The intro space’s left wall features strips of art murals which are then displayed in their entirety throughout the exhibition. The right wall includes monitors that cycle through “then and now” photographs of Los Angeles’s changing landscape. The striking visuals of this space effectively direct the visitors to the first exhibit area.

The new exit space is where visitors can reflect on the content they just absorbed and consider their own personal Los Angeles stories. Two interactives were added where visitors can share their own Los Angeles stories through recording booths and listen to other visitors’ stories via a listening wall.
